The Abbaye aux Dames is often paired mechanically with William’s abbey, but it deserves its own story. Queen Matilda of Flanders founded this convent and was buried in the church of Sainte-Trinité.
Female monastic houses could control land, educate elite women and operate within dynastic politics. Matilda herself was not simply “William’s wife”; contemporary evidence shows her exercising authority in Normandy during his absences.
The abbey later changed uses and today forms part of Normandy’s regional administrative complex. A foundation created for religious women now houses secular government—an unusually clear example of institutional reuse.
