The Caen Memorial opened in 1988 with an ambition broader than a battlefield museum. Its exhibitions place the Normandy campaign within the causes of the Second World War, occupation, genocide, the Cold War and later ideas of peace.
That framing matters in a city badly damaged during liberation. The Allied campaign was necessary to defeat Nazi Germany, but bombing also killed French civilians and destroyed homes. Serious memory has to hold both truths at once.
The museum’s location near a former German command bunker reinforces the point: war history is not a simple sequence of heroes and villains at the local scale, even when the larger political stakes are clear.
