Place Saint-Sauveur developed as one of Caen’s important market and judicial spaces. Its façades largely reflect the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries rather than William the Conqueror’s era.
Unlike much of central Caen, the square escaped catastrophic destruction in 1944. That makes it valuable as a baseline: here you can see the scale and street wall that postwar planners inherited elsewhere only in fragments.
Survival creates its own distortion. Visitors may assume the old city always looked like this square. In reality, it is exceptional precisely because nearby districts were rebuilt so extensively.
