The Vaugueux district preserves narrow streets and older houses that escaped the complete destruction experienced by other parts of Caen. That survival can make it look like an untouched medieval quarter, but the area was heavily affected by 1944 bombing and loss.
Its working-class history and small-scale buildings contrast with the postwar planning elsewhere. The neighbourhood therefore works as evidence of what reconstruction changed: street widths, building lines and the relationship between home and road.
Preservation here is partly accidental. War destroys unevenly, leaving fragments that later acquire symbolic value because so much around them disappeared.
