Graville stands above the Seine estuary and preserves a history older than the city of Le Havre, which was founded only in the sixteenth century. The abbey church contains major Romanesque fabric and developed around the cult of Saint Honorina.
Its elevated position once overlooked a landscape of river, marsh and approaches to the sea rather than container terminals and modern docks. That longer view matters. Le Havre did not create the estuary’s strategic importance; it reorganized an already inhabited and sacred landscape around a new royal port.
Graville is therefore a useful final correction to the city’s modern image: the harbour is young, but the estuary’s human history is not.
