This surviving residence in the Saint-François quarter is associated with Michel-Joseph Dubocage, a navigator and merchant active in the early eighteenth century. His voyages linked Le Havre to a world of long-distance navigation, private commerce and imperial competition.
The district itself predates the Perret reconstruction and therefore provides rare urban texture from the older port. Timber, brick and narrow streets show a different scale from the postwar grid.
Maritime success was never only about heroic captains. It depended on shipbuilding, finance, warehouses, sailors, colonial networks and risk. The house works best as an entry point into that entire commercial system.
