Hôtel Le Vergeur brings Reims down from kings and bishops to wealthy urban households. The complex grew from medieval and Renaissance buildings near the old forum and later became the home of collector Hugues Krafft.
Furniture, prints and domestic rooms show how status could be expressed away from monumental public architecture. The house was also damaged in the First World War and later restored.
That makes it a lesson in curation. Historic centres are not neutral time capsules. Someone decides what to repair, which period to emphasise and how private objects become public heritage. Le Vergeur makes that process visible on the scale of one house.
