Saint-Remi explains why Reims could claim a special place in French monarchy. The abbey grew around the tomb of Bishop Rémi, who baptized the Frankish king Clovis around the turn of the sixth century.
The abbey later guarded the Holy Ampulla, the vessel of chrism used for royal anointing. During coronations it was carried from here to the cathedral, making the monastic community part of state ritual.
The abbey’s ceremonial role is documented. Stories that the sacred oil itself descended miraculously from heaven belong to religious tradition, not verifiable event history. The historical power of the object did not depend on the legend being literally true.
