The amphitheatre was built around the late first century CE and could accommodate large crowds for spectacles including gladiatorial combat.
Roman arenas were sophisticated crowd-management machines. Staircases, entrances and seating zones moved thousands of people while preserving social hierarchy.
After antiquity, the arena became a fortified settlement with houses and even churches inside its walls. Those later structures were removed in the modern period as authorities sought to recover the monument’s Roman appearance.
Today the arena again hosts events.
So which phase is “authentic”? The Roman amphitheatre, the medieval fortress-neighbourhood and the modern venue are all historically real.
Heritage management simply has to choose which century gets the best seats.
