Maison Carrée was built in the early first century CE and dedicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, adopted heirs of Augustus. UNESCO highlights it as an exceptionally preserved example of a Roman temple connected to the imperial cult.
That dedication is political theology. Honouring members of the imperial family helped provincial elites demonstrate loyalty to the new Augustan order.
The building survived because it was repeatedly reused for functions including a church, meeting space and archive. Those changes altered it but also prevented demolition for building stone.
Its name, “Square House”, uses the older French sense of carré for a rectangular form. Even the label is a small historical trap.
The temple looks pristine after restoration. Its biography is anything but.
