The Mediterranean garden beside St Lawrence Monastery is a modern restoration project inspired by the kinds of medicinal, culinary and ornamental plants associated with historical monastic gardens. It should not be mistaken for an untouched medieval planting scheme.
That does not make it inauthentic. Reconstruction can help visitors understand how monasteries managed useful plants, food, medicine and enclosed outdoor space.
A local legend says the great cathedral builder Juraj Dalmatinac brought capers to Šibenik. It is a legend, not a documented botanical fact. The garden acknowledges that tradition while the living plants connect heritage to the region’s actual Mediterranean ecology.
