St Nicholas Fortress stands at the entrance to St Anthony’s Channel, far from the hill forts above the old town. Venice commissioned it in the sixteenth century to prevent hostile naval forces from entering Šibenik Bay.
Its position explains its form. This is maritime artillery architecture designed for ships approaching a narrow channel, not for armies crossing the inland hills. Architect Giangirolamo Sanmicheli produced a work that became part of the wider Venetian defensive system now recognized by UNESCO.
Šibenik therefore needed multiple fortresses because “defence” was not one problem. Sea and land demanded different geometries.
