St Michael’s Fortress occupies the hill directly above the old town and is the oldest core of Šibenik’s defensive system. Medieval walls protected the high point controlling the harbour and settlement below.
The fortress changed repeatedly as weapons and political threats changed. Explosions, repairs and modern restoration mean the visible structure is not one untouched medieval design.
Its present use as an open-air performance venue is another transformation. Military architecture survives by acquiring a peacetime public function, turning a former controlled space into a place designed to gather crowds rather than repel them.
