St John’s Fortress was built in 1646 on higher ground above Šibenik as Ottoman forces threatened Venetian Dalmatia from the hinterland. Contemporary accounts emphasize the speed of construction and the participation of local citizens.
The star-like artillery design belongs to a different military age from the medieval castle below. Cannon fire required lower, angled works able to control approaches rather than simply tall walls.
This fortress therefore records emergency mobilisation. Defence was not an abstract Venetian policy imposed from afar; townspeople had direct reason to invest labour because the danger was close enough to see from the hills.
