By the twentieth century, Gödöllő had entered a completely different political world. During Miklós Horthy’s regency the palace served as a state residence, and wartime preparations included protected spaces associated with government survival.
The bunker is a sharp contrast to Baroque halls and Sisi nostalgia. It represents a Europe of air raids, total war and political collapse. Heritage sites often prefer their most photogenic periods, but buildings do not get to choose their history. Gödöllő passed from aristocratic estate to royal residence to a site touched directly by the security logic of the Second World War.
