Győr’s story ends where it began: with water. The Rába, Rábca and Mosoni-Duna system made the area valuable for transport, mills, trade and defence, but also exposed the city to flooding.
River cities are always negotiating between connection and danger. Embankments, bridges and regulated channels are part of the historic landscape even when they look modern. From Radó Island, the old city’s strategic position becomes obvious. Győr did not become important because a ruler randomly chose it. Geography repeatedly gave people reasons to fortify, tax, trade and rebuild here.
