The monumental synagogue reflects the growth and confidence of Győr’s Jewish community in the nineteenth century, when legal emancipation and economic modernisation were reshaping Hungarian cities. Jewish merchants, professionals and industrialists participated deeply in urban life while maintaining distinct religious institutions.
That trajectory was violently broken in 1944, when Hungarian Jews were ghettoised and deported under German occupation and Hungarian collaboration. The building’s later cultural use cannot erase that rupture. It is one of the places where prosperous civic integration and the catastrophe of the Holocaust have to be held in the same story.
