This square sits near the heart of a settlement whose roots reach back to Roman Arrabona. The Roman military and trading site did not create today’s Baroque square directly, but it established the strategic importance of this river crossing region.
The present architecture belongs largely to the prosperous rebuilding after the Ottoman frontier period. Merchants, church institutions and civic government turned a heavily fortified town into a more comfortable urban centre. That is why Győr often feels simultaneously old and orderly: much of the visible historic fabric comes from a concentrated period of reconstruction rather than uninterrupted medieval survival.
