Győr’s cathedral anchors the episcopal city. Among its most important objects is the herm of Saint Ladislaus, a richly worked reliquary associated with one of medieval Hungary’s canonised kings.
Relics were not museum pieces in the Middle Ages. They linked local churches to sacred authority, attracted devotion and strengthened institutional prestige. The cathedral’s repeated rebuilding also records Győr’s vulnerability: warfare and changing styles altered the complex over centuries. What matters most is continuity of function. Even as walls and facades changed, the bishopric remained one of the institutions that gave the city regional importance.
