Kossuth Square gathers institutions that a self-confident nineteenth-century city wanted in one place: town hall, major churches and commercial streets. Kecskemét had grown through livestock trading and agriculture rather than aristocratic court life.
That made civic government unusually important to its identity. The square became a stage where a market town could present itself as disciplined, prosperous and modern. The surrounding architecture is therefore less about one patron than about municipal ambition.
