The Town Hall, designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos, is one of Hungary’s landmark works of late nineteenth-century architecture. Its colourful roof and ornament borrow from Hungarian and wider Central European decorative traditions rather than simply copying a Western historic style.
The building makes government visually memorable. A municipality that handled taxes, markets and urban services wrapped those practical functions in an architecture intended to look specifically Hungarian and unmistakably modern.
