In August 1532, Ottoman forces under Sultan Suleiman advanced toward the Habsburg lands and besieged Kőszeg. Captain Nikola Jurisics commanded the defence. Later patriotic retellings sometimes simplify the episode into a tiny garrison decisively defeating an enormous army. The real outcome was more complicated: repeated assaults failed, negotiations followed, and the Ottoman campaign eventually moved on as strategic and seasonal pressures accumulated.

That does not make the defence less remarkable. It makes it more historical. A small border fortress delayed a major campaign and then became a powerful symbol precisely because contemporaries and later generations understood what had been at stake.
