A fortress could protect Kőszeg, but a town needed institutions to function. Jurisics Square preserves the scale of a small western Hungarian urban centre with its town hall, churches and merchant houses.
Kőszeg benefited from routes toward Austria and the wider Habsburg lands. Market privileges, craft production and local administration mattered on ordinary days when no army was outside the walls. The square is therefore an antidote to siege tunnel vision. Most of Kőszeg’s history consisted of taxation, lawsuits, worship, trade and maintenance—the repetitive work that actually allowed a fortified town to survive for centuries.
