Kőszeg’s western position made it particularly exposed to the religious changes of the Reformation. Lutheran ideas spread strongly through towns and noble networks in sixteenth-century western Hungary. Churches changed hands as rulers, landlords and communities contested confessional control.
St James reminds us that the century of Ottoman warfare was also a century of Christian division. People living in a frontier town could fear an external army while arguing intensely among themselves about worship, clergy and doctrine. Later Catholic restoration changed that balance again. The town’s religious map was not stable; it was negotiated over generations.
