These foundations once supported one of the most politically important churches in medieval Hungary. King Stephen the First founded the royal basilica here, and for centuries it became a place of coronation, royal burial and state ceremony. Dozens of Hungarian kings were crowned in Székesfehérvár.
The building suffered during the Ottoman period and later disappeared as a functioning church. What remains is therefore more powerful than it first looks: an archaeological footprint of a political centre whose ceremonial importance far exceeded the size of the ruins. Fehérvár teaches a useful heritage lesson—sometimes the most important monument in a city is the one you have to reconstruct mentally.
