Székesfehérvár was one of medieval Hungary’s central royal places: kings were crowned and buried here, yet the great basilica that made the city famous is now an archaeological ruin. This guide follows that absence through coronation memory, Baroque rebuilding, Serbian settlement, modern bathing culture and an eccentric twentieth-century castle built by one artist for his own idea of permanence.
