The Fire Tower has sometimes been casually described as a former Ottoman minaret. The city’s official tourism material explicitly rejects that idea. Its history belongs instead to fortification and urban fire protection.
That correction is more interesting than the myth. Early modern towns feared fire because tightly packed roofs, timber interiors and limited water could turn one accident into catastrophe. Towers gave watchers height to detect smoke and sound alarms. Veszprém’s tower therefore links the castle’s defensive past to the practical management of a civilian city. Not every tall old tower needs an exotic origin; sometimes the real story is municipal risk management.
