Heroes’ Gate looks medieval enough to be mistaken for an ancient entrance, but its present form dates from the twentieth century. It was created as a memorial to people from Veszprém who died in Hungary’s wars.
That makes it a useful starting point: before we enter the old castle district, we pass through a modern interpretation of sacrifice and local identity. Historic towns often blend surviving fabric with later monuments so seamlessly that visitors stop asking when each piece was made. Here, the gate turns entry itself into remembrance. It also shows how the castle hill remained a symbolic stage long after it stopped functioning as a fortress.
