This small chapel is valuable not because it is large or spectacular, but because medieval wall paintings survive here. The name connects it with Queen Gisela, wife of Saint Stephen, although the present chapel is later than her lifetime.
That distinction matters. Historic buildings often acquire names that express memory rather than strict construction dates. The surviving frescoes give us something more concrete: evidence of the artistic culture of the medieval episcopal centre. Instead of imagining the Middle Ages as grey stone, picture painted interiors, textiles, metalwork and colour. What survives today is only a fraction of what medieval visitors would have seen.
