The Baroque appearance of the castle district is evidence of recovery after the Ottoman frontier period, not evidence that nothing happened here before. Bishops rebuilt the hill as a coherent ecclesiastical centre with palaces, canons’ houses and ceremonial space.
The archbishop’s palace expresses a church that was also a major landowner and political institution. Baroque urbanism liked controlled vistas and theatrical squares, and Veszprém used that language to replace the visual disorder left by war and repeated rebuilding. The result feels harmonious because eighteenth-century patrons deliberately made it so.
