Vígszínház belongs to the entertainment economy of Budapest’s great boulevard age.
The theatre opened in the 1890s near the Grand Boulevard and became a major dramatic institution. Its location concentrated audiences arriving from dense residential districts and public transport. War damage and later reconstruction altered the building while the company retained national cultural importance.
Theatre begins the guide because District Thirteen’s southern edge is culturally tied to inner Pest before the urban form changes northward.
