Piazza Grande is visually dramatic partly because it is not level. The sloping site collects buildings from different periods around a space used for markets, civic ceremony and public competition. Vasari’s later loggia adds Renaissance order without erasing the medieval structures around it.
The square is also associated today with the Giostra del Saracino, a historical pageant and jousting competition revived in the twentieth century. Its modern form should not be mistaken for an uninterrupted medieval tournament surviving unchanged. Like many civic traditions, it combines older references with deliberate modern revival.
That does not make it fake. It shows how communities actively manufacture continuity, selecting parts of the past to perform in the present.
