The Roman amphitheatre is a reminder that ancient Arretium was more than an ancestor of a medieval Tuscan town. It was a prosperous Roman centre known especially for fine red-gloss pottery—often called Arretine ware—that circulated widely across the empire.
The amphitheatre, built in the imperial period, provided mass entertainment on the southern edge of the city. Much of its masonry later became a convenient quarry for new construction, a common fate for Roman monuments after their original function disappeared.
Beside the ruins, the archaeological museum helps reconnect architecture with objects of daily and commercial life. Rome here is not only emperors and arenas. It is manufacturing, trade and a provincial city plugged into Mediterranean markets.
