The funicular began operating in the late nineteenth century, when Bergamo’s lower city was growing and the steep climb to Città Alta was becoming an obstacle to everyday movement. Mechanized transport changed the relationship between the two halves of Bergamo.
This matters for preservation. Historic districts survive more easily when people can still reach and use them. The funicular did not freeze Città Alta in the past; it connected the old centre to a modernizing city below.
Today tourists may experience the ride as an attraction. For residents it is also public transport. That double identity is exactly why it belongs in the guide: heritage works best when infrastructure remains useful after its novelty has worn off.
