The Rocca occupies one of Città Alta’s strongest positions. Medieval rulers strengthened this high point because control of the hill meant control of the city. Under Venice it became part of a broader defensive system.
Today its grounds include the Parco delle Rimembranze and a museum focused on the nineteenth century, especially the Risorgimento and Italian unification. That change of use is revealing. Once the fortress stopped protecting a regime, the site became a place for explaining later regimes and national memory.
Military landscapes often undergo this transformation: from practical defence to symbolic history. The view from the ramparts now attracts visitors, but its commanding position is exactly why soldiers valued it first.
