Piazza Vecchia emerged gradually as private buildings were removed and civic institutions took over the centre of Città Alta. Its present appearance is therefore the result of political editing, not a medieval square preserved unchanged.
The Palazzo della Ragione, the civic tower and later Palazzo Nuovo frame different phases of government. The Contarini Fountain added in the Venetian period served both practical and decorative purposes.
Listen for the Campanone—the great civic bell. Its traditional hundred evening strokes recall the old closing of the city gates. Whether you live here or visit once, that sound makes an abstract idea physical: before electronic clocks and notifications, authority could organize urban time with a bell audible across the hill.
