The Palazzo della Ragione was the seat of communal justice and administration. Its open ground-floor loggia creates a transition between Piazza Vecchia and Piazza Duomo, physically linking civic and religious centres.

Inside and beneath it, layers accumulated rather than replacing one another. Frescoes survive from medieval buildings, while a late-eighteenth-century meridian line uses sunlight to mark local noon and the date on the pavement.

That combination is unusually revealing. A government building could be court, archive, meeting place, exhibition space and scientific instrument at different times. “Historic monument” sounds static; Palazzo della Ragione survived by being anything but static.
