Saint Anthony died near Padua in 1231 and was canonized less than a year later. The enormous basilica that grew around his cult combines domes, Gothic structure, chapels and later additions because pilgrimage kept generating new demands.
Inside, Donatello’s bronze works helped redefine Renaissance sculpture, while the saint’s tomb remains the devotional centre for visitors from far beyond Italy. Notice how religious and artistic fame reinforce one another without being identical: some people come for Anthony, others for Donatello, many for both.
The basilica is therefore an institution managing crowds, relics, donations, art and ritual across centuries. Its architecture records expansion more than stylistic purity.
