The Palazzo della Ragione stood between Padua’s main market squares and housed courts and civic administration. Its huge upper hall brought government literally above commerce. The roof, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, spans an unusually broad interior without a forest of supports.
The walls carry an extensive astrological fresco cycle, linking months, zodiac signs, occupations and human character. That mixture of law and cosmology can seem strange today, but medieval government did not separate practical administration from the wider intellectual order people believed governed the world.
Below, shops and food stalls keep the commercial function alive. The building still works because the boundary between monument and market was never absolute.
