The University of Padua was founded in 1222 after scholars left Bologna, and Palazzo Bo later became its central seat. The university developed a strong reputation for legal, medical and scientific study under the Venetian Republic.
Its anatomical theatre, created in the sixteenth century, allowed students to observe dissections from steep concentric galleries. Galileo Galilei taught in Padua from 1592 to 1610 and later described those years as among the happiest of his life.
The useful story here is institutional freedom rather than one famous professor. Universities survived because communities of scholars built privileges, procedures and teaching spaces that outlived individual careers.
