Ravenna

Ravenna became the capital of the Western Roman Empire in 402, then a centre of Ostrogothic and Byzantine power. Its mosaics are not glittering wallpaper: they are political theology. This route uses five monuments to explain why emperors, Gothic kings and Constantinople all invested in a city whose art makes regime change look deceptively seamless.
