Sant’Apollinare Nuovo was originally associated with Theodoric’s palace and Arian court. After the Byzantine takeover it was rededicated and its decorative programme was altered.
Look closely at the palace mosaics. Scholars have long noted traces where figures associated with the Gothic court were removed: hands and other remnants survive against architectural backgrounds. This is one of Ravenna’s most satisfying historical details because it is regime change with bad digital erasing — except the software was mosaic plaster.
Do not oversimplify the alteration as one instant purge of every Gothic image. The building had multiple decorative phases. But the broad point is secure: the monument was adapted to new religious and political authority.
The long processions of saints now create visual order, repetition and certainty. That is exactly what a city experiencing political discontinuity might want from sacred art: a world in which everyone knows where to stand.
