Dora I is a huge reinforced-concrete submarine bunker built by Nazi Germany during the occupation of Norway. Trondheim’s deep-water position made it valuable to the Kriegsmarine as a base for U-boats operating in the North Atlantic. The structure was designed to survive bombing, which created a postwar problem: demolishing it would have been extremely difficult and expensive. Instead, parts of the bunker were reused for storage, archives and commercial purposes. This is heritage created by physical stubbornness. The building remains not because later Trondheim wanted a Nazi monument, but because wartime engineering produced a structure too massive to erase easily.
