At Torvet, the monument to Olav Tryggvason turns Trondheim’s traditional founding story into a civic landmark. The king is conventionally credited with establishing the town in 997, although settlements and trading activity in the area predate any single founding act. That caveat matters. Medieval cities rarely begin on one exact day because a ruler orders them into existence. The monument belongs to a later tradition that wanted a clear founder and anniversary. The square around it is equally modern in function: a planned open centre created through successive rebuilding. Here, historical memory and urban design cooperate to make a complicated origin story look satisfyingly simple.
