Piotrkowska Street became the long organizing axis of industrial Łódź. In the nineteenth century, building plots stretched away from the road while shops, offices, tenements and manufacturers’ residences accumulated along its frontage. This was a planned industrial city expanding at astonishing speed, not a medieval centre slowly thickening over centuries. The street’s unusual length records that growth. Entrepreneurs wanted addresses on the main corridor; workers crossed it on the way to factories; banks and shops followed money and population. Look down the street and the point becomes obvious: Łódź was built linearly, commercially and speculatively. Its main monument is not one building but the urban axis itself.
