The Order’s devotion to the Virgin Mary was embedded in its identity, and the castle church placed that devotion at the heart of the High Castle. Its scale increased as Malbork’s political importance grew. Religion and government were not separate departments here; authority was justified through a sacred mission.
The enormous exterior Madonna became one of the complex’s most recognisable images. It was badly damaged during the fighting of 1945 and later reconstructed, a reminder that the “medieval” appearance visitors see includes major modern conservation work. The church is therefore both evidence of Teutonic ideology and of postwar decisions about what should be restored.
