The Nogat explains why this gigantic complex belongs here. Rivers moved bulk goods more efficiently than medieval roads, connecting the state to the Vistula system and Baltic commerce. Grain, timber and supplies could move through a wider economic network.
The river view also frames Malbork’s later transformations. Polish forces took the castle in 1457; Prussia acquired it in 1772 and later made it a major restoration project; fighting in 1945 devastated large parts of the complex. Reconstruction after the war created much of the coherent monument seen today. The river has watched Malbork change states, languages and historical meanings while remaining the practical reason this site could sustain power at such scale.
