Ostrów Tumski, Cathedral Island, is one of the places where the early Polish state becomes visible in archaeology and architecture. A bishopric was established in Poznań in 968, and the cathedral developed in close connection with the Piast rulers. The present church is the product of many rebuildings, so its façade is not a frozen tenth-century monument. The important story lies below and around it: elite residence, church institution and burial memory concentrated on a defensible island. Early states need more than warriors. They need bishops, writing, ritual, taxation and places where authority can be staged. Poznań supplied those functions at a formative moment in Polish history.
