Poznań’s university trained the Polish mathematicians Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski, whose work in the 1930s broke key elements of the German Enigma cipher system. Their achievement depended on a shift in cryptanalysis from linguistic intuition toward mathematics, permutations and systematic reconstruction of machine behavior. Poland shared its methods with French and British allies shortly before the Second World War, giving later Allied codebreaking a crucial foundation. The story matters locally because this was not anonymous wartime genius appearing at Bletchley Park. A major part of the intellectual breakthrough began with mathematicians recruited and trained in Poznań.
