The Poznań fairgrounds became one of the interwar Polish state’s most important economic stages. Trade fairs connected manufacturers, buyers and foreign delegations, while architecture and exhibition design advertised a country trying to modernize after regaining independence. The site continued to matter after the Second World War and became entangled with the June 1956 uprising because international visitors were in the city when protests erupted. That visibility complicated attempts to contain the news. The fair therefore links commerce and politics in an unexpected way. A place designed to show Poland to the world also helped ensure that the world saw a crisis the communist authorities would have preferred to control.
